For many people receiving a diagnosis of ADHD produces a mix of emotions. Relief that there is a name that they can put to what they are experiencing but sometimes mixed in with some regret that it wasn’t caught earlier or in the case of a child that they have a “disorder.”
We look at ADHD as a trait that comes with both positive and negative attributes. We also know that ADHD is on a continuum, so someone with 3 or 4 symptoms may still need help.
We will ask you to fill out a symptoms rating scale and questionnaire that asks about family history, medical, and mental health background. You will also meet with one of our diagnosing therapists who will do an in-depth clinical interview as well as behavior observation.
Since ADHD often comes with other mental health conditions, our diagnosing therapists are also looking for anxiety, depression, or other conditions. Sometimes, people come to us wondering about ADHD and they don’t have it at all.
If the diagnosing therapist concludes that you do have ADHD or any other condition, we schedule a follow-up session to review the results and discuss a treatment plan. It is important that our clients leave their diagnosis appointments with a positive frame of mind. After all, people with ADHD who work on themselves have successful and fulfilling lives.
Like most diagnosis decisions, you should make sure that this critical work is put in the hands of people like our therapists who are experienced at ADHD diagnosis and do this work often. You can be sure that you will get accurate evaluation results if you work with our team.
